to show of barack obama that we don't already know? seeing is believing. the three times the debates have changed the lead in a presidential race. each time it was about the words, but also that something else, something that told voters what they didn't know and all of a sudden mattered a lot. and finally, bad numbers. barack obama's ahead in nearly every national poll and battle ground state poll. but what do we really make of the crunchers who say mitt romney has just a 1-5 chance to win this election? hi, i'm chris mathews. welcome to the show. with us today, new york magazine's john, trish and kelly and the huffington post's d howard. with just over a month to go for mitt romney, given the polls, the debates may be it. it could change the narrative that has dogged him or cemented. romney has the same urgent must-do list that he at the republican convention. only now could be his last chance. today we're going to look at romney's career, back at his career, at some missteps in past debates and also at some gems from barack obama. first up, first on romney's must-do list, get likable.

of the state where tampa and orlando are and the miami metro area. .. we see college graduate group that obama lost by about 11 points in 2008. facing the most polls he's physically about even. i think that makes it very difficult for romney to put together a coalition that can take the state. colorado has been fairly close so again obama mabey looks like a fairy or four-point lead on average read a lot of demographic change. you can see the minority eligible voters have gone up by three percentage points and working-class voters in 2008 have gone down by three percentage points. again it doesn't appear that romney is able to turn the demographics tie in his favor. he's not doing much better among the white working-class voters according to the polls i've seen. he's made some progress on the outside margin that obama got 14 points in 2008 among the college graduate voters but he's not making nearly enough voters to take the state and if you break it down geographically the denver metro area is about half the vote in the state but that looks very similar in the polling data as it did in 2008. f

in the court, i think because of citizens united. perhaps they paid more attention around the decision of obama care. not only is there greater interest in the court, but there's also growing concern about the corporate tilt of the supreme court and the fact this is a supreme court that finds in case after case involving big corporations that they should retain power at the expension of the people. there is quite a lot of -- >> i actually think that's an interesting angle. the reason the court has been so -- has loomed to low in political life and the moments it's been a big election issue is because of social issues. i think primarily because of roe. it's because of roe. in some ways, the conservative arguments against roe as a bit of constitutional jurisprudence is taking it out it creates a high stakes battle against the court. not an argument i agree with but one many people make. one of the reasons maybe the courts a little absent from this campaign is because of much of what the jurisprudence has been about. citizens united have not been in the social realm, they have been in the helm of
